Common dictionary words are not trademarkable. In fact, if an existing trademark becomes common in speech it becomes genericized and the trademark is lost. One of my personal hobbies is doing that to Velcro.

That, and you’ve got to remember how big iPods were at the time. In 2007, it was weird that Apple was entering the cell phone market. The iSomething branding basically saved the company in 2001 with the iMac and iBook, the iPod was the first electronics gadget I ever remember being worn as a status symbol, the first that got treated like designer clothing or shoes. That “I have an iPod, and you have…whatever that is.” White headphone cords were a fashion statement. The Motorola Razr phone got the same treatment before the iPhone.

GNOME folks are like “well, before GNOME was even a thing, we had this application called The Gimp, and we kinda wish we didn’t call it that, so please don’t name your apps for laughs OK?”

It’s telling me to slow down when I try to look under the hood.

I keep having to work around it.

    The terms-of-service were too confusing.

It’s not klitoris, I was in the pool.

It’s still the best social media for anything worthwhile. Hyperlocal news, sports, government agencies, corporate news, everyone posts there since nobody looks at Facebook anymore and Instagram is mainly for pics. All the good artists are on Twitter as well.

Nobody is posting to Mastodon because actually finding information and people is proper impossible. I mean hell I almost never see any posts from Mastodon getting posted to any meme community because everyone is all tech and politics and doom and serious.

Seriously, all Windows software is starting to sound the same, with as little clue as possible as to what it actually does. Remote Desktop on Mac is called “Windows App”. What does that mean? Everything else is called 365.

It’s called Windows app on Windows now as well. But they also have remote desktop still, and they’re not intercompatible.

Microsoft truly are terrible at naming things. They always have been. Remember XBone?

At the same time, I liked .NET’s no-nonsense naming of namespaces. When I see something like System.Threading.Tasks, I can immediately recognise that it’s a namespace that deals with task-based parallelism. Then you have tokio in Rust and I want to stab the person that came up with the name. Same for clap and serde. They mean nothing unless you already know what those packages do.

Yeah except that it’s literally called .NET, pronounced dot net, they included a punctuation symbol in the name. Is it a programming language for the web, nope. So why’s it called that?

The people making the programming language and related tooling seem to know what’s up.

The people making other various products all seem to want to be a super special naming boy.

I’m a dev. I develop little prototypes and things with Rust. I often create a new repository and don’t give the project a name, until I’ve coded enough of it that I know where it’s going.

A few years back, the makers of the programming language Rust started punishing people for prepending rust- before the names of their tools and apps. They recommended that people append -rs to the end.

The combination of these two things caused me to end up with a whole bunch of repositories named something like cli-rs or clitool-rs, both of which I’d just pronounce as clitoris.

Searched everywhere and can’t find the download. Does anyone have a link for the latest klitoris? I can’t locate it and my wife is getting pissed.
