Was going to say. This seems like the most polite kind of person you’re going to meet on the subway. Dude’s not manspreading, not gawking, not trying to get their attention, literally bumped up against a woman and not trying to cop a feel.

This is the Ideal Male Commuter. You may not like him, but this is what peak performance looks like.

Clearly he should be inviting then to murder his wife in exchange for him murdering their husbands. That’s what strangers on a train do, right?

men pay attention to women they get roasted; men ignore women and they get roasted.

it’s almost like there’s a battle of the sexes going on that’s tipped one way because nobody dares speak out on the men’s side because they’ll get labeled an incel or ‘part of the problem.’

neither of those women are worth paying attention to.

The joke is the poorly constructed version of a stereotype that stopped being relevant over a decade ago.

      1. It’s poorly constructed because the joke is the nerd is oblivious/has misplaced priorities, but the joke would only work if the image showed the woman expressing obvious interest in the man, instead of having her back turned to him. As is, the image is literally just two rando’s on the subway doing their own thing.

      2. Nerdy looking guys being too oblivious to engage with hot women stopped being relevant after incel culture, startup bros, PUA, and nerdy-looking billionaires became commonplace.

Wish I was intelligent enough to contribute meaningfully. Instead I just consume and occasionally donate.

Thank you all for your kind replies. Wasn’t fishing for encouragement but I do appreciate it.

If you ever want to grow capability of technical contributions, you are welcome but not necessary.

I would much prefer someone that accepts their level of contribution than one who thinks “Claude can make me a valuable contributor even if I have no idea how to”.

That’s enough, if there’s something you like then contributing to documentation is something that’s more available to the general populace.

      Hey now…

I really don’t mean this as an insult, but you don’t need to be ‘smart’ to contribute.

Take a picture of a bunny, post it to bun alert.

Take a picture of your balls, post it to gone wild.

(well ok maybe don’t jump straight to that)

Ask a stupid question on no stupid questions.

Have a political opinion, on the internet.

Find a niche comm for a video game and ask something about it.

Find a neat chart and post it to data is beautiful.

Probably the worst thing that can happen is … some random assholes give you the wrong color arrow thingy. Who cares! Fuck em! Its just numbers on a screen!

To add to this for those who may be reading it like it’s only technically related: “we all lift together”.

We all live in the same world and any positive contribution to anything will ultimately contribute positively to other things, the domino effect; perhaps even the thing you wish you could contribute to directly but “can’t”. People who care, who try, who persist despite the pain and hardship, who try to do their best, who learn and improve and find that kind of lifestyle fitting for them - are those who contribute to all they’re aware of as well as not.

By opening a bread factory, bread in your area gets cheaper > more supply > your area imports less > some other country with an open source contributor exports less > that country has more supply > it’s cheaper for that developer to buy bread

A silly made up example that may not exactly be right itself with the too many factors accounted for, but you get the point. Indirect contribution is contribution as well. This applies to all kinds of contribution, which is why a someone with good intentions that improves themselves in whatever way is a contributor as well.

What my point is, and of the original comment (if I’m not mistaken) is that doing your best truly and genuinely is enough. Not in a condescending “sure lil bro, ig that counts too” way, but in the way of the lyric I really love quoting with which I started my comment “we all lift together” (banger song from a banger game btw)

Knowledge knows no bounds. Being smart is about always learning and reevaluating the foundations.

Smart people always are eager to learn. Self-claimed intellectuals often aren’t broad in mind, just confident.

“Who we are now is but a stepping stone to what we can become.”

        No one is static.

Everyone is an ongoing process… and you do have the ability to direct where that goes, how it changes.

Not an infinite or unlimited ability… but likely more ability than you initially may think.

Sitting next to a (supposedly) random dude and visibly being comfortable and not nervous is a green flag for the programmer.

It means he’s showered in the last week.

… but then I remembered how long it had been since I had a shower.
