Once again DO NOT CONNECT YOYR SMART TV TO THE INTERNET
Do not do it. It’s not smart, it’s a spy device.
Yup.
I’m stuck with a smart TV, but it’s from Pre-LLM days. I don’t use the smart TV app or connect it to the web. I’ve also got the AI features (“Ad Personalization”, etc.) turned off by default, just because it pleases me.
Thanks for reminding me to block my new vizio from the wifi.
Israel speedrunning “biggest piece of shit country” in the past few years it seems.
they always did shady stuff. the difference is that they are losing international public support so it’s safer to publish that stuff
Past few? They literally started as a bunch of whiners gaslighting other countries for compensations and pity and playing victim.
Wasn’t their founder the colonialist so vile Cecil Rhodes, the man for whom Rhodesia was named, called him out for being too vile a shit candle, and refused to get involved on moral grounds? I know they had a moment like that a few years later with Hitler, when their all volunteer SS unit got side lined. The world is so antisemitic sometimes.
Cheating with a save state just out of frame, doesn’t count.
Great article; thanks for sharing.
Does anyone have any similar articles that can show why smart-TV connection is a terrible idea to a non-technical user?
even without shady stuff. it’s just common sense. disconnect the ‘computer’ from the ‘display’ so you don’t need to replace both when the ‘computer’ becomes obsolete–and it will, usually, before the ‘display’ quits working. don’t connect it. if you want ‘smart tv’ functionality, get a cheaper and easier-to-replace streaming device of your choice instead.
beware of models or brands you have to go online with just to ‘set up’. more and more are ‘requiring’ internet access and/or an ‘account’ just to turn on and use as a ‘dumb’ display.

Wtf, ive never seen/heard of this (though it has been 3+ years since I last bought a TV). Can you point to any brands/models that require this specifically? Want to be sure those never show up on a “to be considered list” for myself.
My last LG started turning blue after just 5 years, but I still use the Apple TV I bought with it. With enshitification happening the way it is I think it may be the computer that starts to outlast the screen.
