even without shady stuff. it’s just common sense. disconnect the ‘computer’ from the ‘display’ so you don’t need to replace both when the ‘computer’ becomes obsolete–and it will, usually, before the ‘display’ quits working. don’t connect it. if you want ‘smart tv’ functionality, get a cheaper and easier-to-replace streaming device of your choice instead.
beware of models or brands you have to go online with just to ‘set up’. more and more are ‘requiring’ internet access and/or an ‘account’ just to turn on and use as a ‘dumb’ display.

Wtf, ive never seen/heard of this (though it has been 3+ years since I last bought a TV). Can you point to any brands/models that require this specifically? Want to be sure those never show up on a “to be considered list” for myself.
My last LG started turning blue after just 5 years, but I still use the Apple TV I bought with it. With enshitification happening the way it is I think it may be the computer that starts to outlast the screen.
