I like GrapheneOS but I don’t like it that much. 2 thousand dollars… Good damn.
F*ck me, 2000 dollars?! I really wanted to give this a go, but def not for that amount of money
Yeah no, even the 300-350€ (don’t remember it exactly anymore) I spent on my Pixel 9a were overpriced to me, I don’t even need half of the storage, RAM and CPU speed in here. We really need way less capable but equally as secure phones, who the fuck needs that much computing power to browse websites and write on Signal?
I really hope that the Pixel 12’s will be supported again by GrapheneOS or a cheaper option will be made by Motorola. Otherwise I will have to keep my Pixel 10 with Graphene alive forever (?). I do not expect there to be a real second-hand market for this Device to get your hand on one for cheap.
How brainrotted do you have to be to spend that much on a phone with a sealed in 2-year battery?
I thought that’s not even legal to sell in the EU anymore
That requirement applies from products released starting February 18, 2027 so afaik it released just in time to not be required by law to be user replacable.
Silicon-carbon batteries can last up to 7–10 years.
Surely at that price point it is designed to last 8-10 years.
What’s that, it has a glued-in 2 year lithium battery?
Well, this is defintely not good for the GrapheneOS project. they’ve already been criticized for being only accessible by techbros and people with sufficient resources to buy a Pixel. A lot of people were assuming a lower price from Motorola. This is crazy.
I just bought a pixel 10a open box for like $350.
Like I get some people are stuck on Walmart specials, but how cheap does it need to be before its not considered a purchase for the privileged by you?
Well, its not just the money, its the fact that it is a Google product. Many of us, outside the USA don’t trust anything that Google produces, including Android itself (which is why degoogled phones are a thing) nor do we want to fuel the techno fascists running the company.
Grapheme runs tests on googles firmware regularly.
If it was actively doing something it shouldnt, they’d notice.
You could argue there could be something hidden in the firmware for use by the state when they REALLY REALLY REALLY want to get into something, and are willing to blow a good backdoor on it. But that’s also something you deal with on any modern PC, unless you wanna party like its 2011 and run an old FX-Series AMD chip, or a librebooted machine with ME Cleaner. (See Intel ME/AMD PSP)
The pixel is still a product of Google that Google benefits from when you purchase it. Some if us want to avoid contributing to their power as much as we can. Not purchasing a Pixel one of those choices.
Android needs to be replaced as well. I still hold hope for mobile Linux.
Google doesn’t own the PC market.
This was already reported. Expensive flagships will release first, with more affordable devices to follow. Motorola already makes some of the best budget devices.
The fact that a phone costs that much is still completely heinous and sets the bar WAY too fucking high.
And how do you finance the high and long lasting firmware maintenance required by Graphene OS, to stay secure? Is there any anouncement even suggesting that in a reasonable timeline or are you merely engaging in wishful thinking. I’d be surprised if they ever went below midrange with a GrapheneOS device.
Sigh, I guess I’m interested based on the brand and the OS. But that’s hard to swallow. I really want this sort of product. I guess they have to make up for all the kickbacks they won’t be getting from the bloatware that will no longer be there.
That’s the phone price irrelevant of what OS it has. Graphene team said cheaper compatible models are coming.
Dude WHY!? That’s more expensive than the Steam Frame with accessories!
- 4 nm Snapdragon® 8 Gen 3 - ARM64
- 16GB Unified LPDDR5X RAM
- 256GB UFS storage, microSD card slot
- Rechargeable 21.6 Wh Li-ion battery
- 2160 x 2160 LCD (per eye)
- 72-144Hz refresh rate (144Hz experimental)
- Inside-out camera based tracking
- Headset: Wi-Fi 7, 2x2, Dual Radios
- Wireless Adapter Included (Wi-Fi 6E)
- Bluetooth 5.4
- Dual speaker drivers per ear, dual microphone array
- SteamOS 3
- Steam Frame Controllers – full 6-DOF and gamepad controls
- Half-Life: Alyx included
…so, how come the phone costs twice as much as the steam frame?
Look! We tried it, and nobody will buy it!!! Nothing to see here, back to stealing everyone’s data!
Yeah, I’m thinking this too. The old "but we gave the option to people, but people just don’t care."
The “option” :
Off the top of my head I’m guessing that the cost isn’t being subsidized by data mining and certain social media companies paying for their apps to be impossible to completely remove.
Absolutely not
there goes my ability or desire to have one. see ya.
GrapheneOS reigns surpreme. We should all use it. But I am not buying a phone for €2000. Count me out.
Any chance we get a Lite or an “a” series of this phone? Or a more affordable Motorola that meets GrapheneOS’ strict hardware requirements?
Based on my understanding, yes. There will be more affordable models later, they’re supposed to have a full line-up.
But for now, the affordable GOS phone is still a Pixel.
I was really hoping to pay Motorola somewhere around $800-$1200 for a legit option for GrapheneOS that doesn’t involve Google’s hardware.
But at $1600, I don’t think I can justify that.
€1.900 is $2,133 in American, according to a quick Google ask.
Agreed. Can’t justify spending that on a phone. And unfortunately, many others will feel the same, which will result in low sales and it being declared a failure, putting another nail in the coffin for privacy focused consumer products.
