Dude WHY!? That’s more expensive than the Steam Frame with accessories!

- 256GB UFS storage, microSD card slot
- Rechargeable 21.6 Wh Li-ion battery
- 2160 x 2160 LCD (per eye)
- 72-144Hz refresh rate (144Hz experimental)
- Inside-out camera based tracking
- Headset: Wi-Fi 7, 2x2, Dual Radios
- Wireless Adapter Included (Wi-Fi 6E)
- Bluetooth 5.4
- Dual speaker drivers per ear, dual microphone array
- SteamOS 3
- Steam Frame Controllers – full 6-DOF and gamepad controls
- Half-Life: Alyx included
…so, how come the phone costs twice as much as the steam frame?
Look! We tried it, and nobody will buy it!!! Nothing to see here, back to stealing everyone’s data!
Yeah, I’m thinking this too. The old "but we gave the option to people, but people just don’t care."
The “option” :
Off the top of my head I’m guessing that the cost isn’t being subsidized by data mining and certain social media companies paying for their apps to be impossible to completely remove.
Absolutely not
So, a security OS, but people are letting a third party install it so security is as good as any other option.
I don’t think this comment gets enough attention. This is exactly the problem here. You can’t trust any company not to compromise the security on their product.
The issue is its not true. The phone just supports GrapheneOS, it doesn’t come with it, you still have to do that
there goes my ability or desire to have one. see ya.
GrapheneOS reigns surpreme. We should all use it. But I am not buying a phone for €2000. Count me out.
Any chance we get a Lite or an “a” series of this phone? Or a more affordable Motorola that meets GrapheneOS’ strict hardware requirements?
Based on my understanding, yes. There will be more affordable models later, they’re supposed to have a full line-up.
But for now, the affordable GOS phone is still a Pixel.
Huh, only about 4 bucks? Why is it so cheap?
I was really hoping to pay Motorola somewhere around $800-$1200 for a legit option for GrapheneOS that doesn’t involve Google’s hardware.
But at $1600, I don’t think I can justify that.
€1.900 is $2,133 in American, according to a quick Google ask.
Agreed. Can’t justify spending that on a phone. And unfortunately, many others will feel the same, which will result in low sales and it being declared a failure, putting another nail in the coffin for privacy focused consumer products.
I know the Signature is supposed to be their ‘ultra flagship’, but 2 grand?
The worst thing is that I’d even be half interested it it wasn’t this expensive…
I dont exactly have a problem spending $2000 on something, but $2000 for a phone is just stupid.
I guess you could say that about a lot of things; cars, etc.
But just on principle. That phone is not costing 4x more to make, and is not giving me 4x the value as a $500 phone. Or, fuck, give me 10x the value of the $200 phone I have right now that does absolutely everything I want (I guess a better camera would be nice).
I would maybe consider spending $2000 on a phone if it was functionally as usable as a laptop. Which Android is not.
Apple could totally make their new phones work with MacOS as they’ve shown with the MacBook Neo, when connected to a monitor, but they won’t.
It would be pretty amazing if they did though.
I think a powerful Linux phone plus a laptop chassis that connects to the phone somehow and turns it into a laptop would be really nice
I’d pay 2 grand for a car if it was running
All this stuff about the memory crisis; I don’t think phones suddenly cost 4x more to make and if they do, how about don’t put fucking 16GB of RAM in phones?
I can see 16GB phones being useful, but there needs to be cheaper options
The only use I can see for them is gaming and there are better devices for that, for less money.
Running your own LLM models is another one I guess, but I don’t think there’s many people doing that.
Some of us enjoy mobile gaming
But if you had the choice between playing on a phone and playing on a Steam Deck/ROG Ally/MSI thing would you still stick to your phone?
I do not have $2000 so I would mind spending that much on anything
$3075 AUD? Bruh
I’d like to have one, but there’s no fucking way a goddamned PHONE is worth $2000
especially today, when updates are so miniscule, I’m in shock when I realize the pixel 7 I got refurbished still works fine, with zero reason to update.
Yep, been doing used pixels for a while now. They’re all the same anyway. I don’t care about the camera.
My kids are dopes and constantly break screens so I’m not about to buy anything nice. We all have the same model and a spare. Broken, eBay screen, bring in the spare, fix the broken one, is now the spare.
You’ll get a new phone when it doesn’t get updates anymore, then you’ll just get the next one up.
Spending more than $300 on a phone is nuts to me. They’re all the same candy bar anyway.
It’d be cool to get the ThinkPhone with Graphene.
I guess I’ll upgrade to a Pixel 8 Pro instead
I have one with Graphene OS and I would recommend it. Only downside is the battery life which isn’t great. With screen on I can only get 4-5 hours of battery life. I’ve gotten used to carry a power bank with it when I will be using it heavily.
So basically not an upgrade from my Pixel 6 Pro then. Irritating that Google/GrapheneOS abandons phones that work perfectly fine since that’s the only reason I’m even considering an upgrade.
Looks like I better hope the year of the Linux phone arrives before I need to replace my current phone, unless this is followed up by announcing some more budget friendly lines that also meet GrapheneOS’ minimum requirements.
What’s the best way to get a new, unlocked pixel (any supported version) for < $500 without needing to have a new contract with a carrier?
Just keep an eye on slickdeals? Wait till a new version comes out and look for sales on the old version?
Used market if thats an option locally?
If in the states, micro center carries refurbished models under 500.
I got mine used from best buy, lots of used phones with low mileage
Honestly i’d just get a renewed pixel 8
