Imagine filling this in, in the improvements suggestions spreadsheet. “Who entered this row? I said WHO ENTERED THIS ROW.”

Welcome to Tuta btw. The apps are pretty garbage but it’s home.

        ;)

Oh and by the by, I rather like the way they tie mail, calendar together in the same app, “tabbed” style, sort of. Give me a year and I might have some complaints, but for right now my only complaint so far is it seems the “Revolutionary” level subscription isn’t “high-falutin’” enough to be allowed to import old mail. Just prompts me to upgrade my account.

Their youtube channel has a year old video about importing that says “all paid tiers in the future” but I guess we’re not at that future yet.

I believe “one click import” or something similar was a recently new feature, or something like that? Like importing, or moving from, other providers. I might misremember though.

Yes sadly it appears that’s the feature that just opens a prompt to upgrade my sub. I’m fine with a local archive of my other account, so for me that’s fine, for others it might not be. Thank you though!

Ah, the “one click” thing was for exporting from Tuta rather than importing, my mistake.

              Either way, I found this:

We’re thrilled to be able to offer email import (in beta) currently to Legend and Unlimited users. In the future, email import will become available for all new paid plans but as we have just released it in test mode, it’s temporarily necessary to limit the number of users importing.

              — Posted on 2025-02-12

What worries me a little bit is the “will become available for all [NEW] paid plans” part, as if old paid accounts won’t be getting this new feature. But I hope that’s just a phrasing mistake/interpretation error.

I’m currently on Legend because they had some deal a while ago where you could get on that plan for the same price as Revolutionary, but I don’t see import in the mobile app. I could check the desktop app later!

Edit: yeah, when I’m using the desktop app, I see the import option, and clicking it does not prompt me to upgrade my subscription. (It just shows me the screen to import email as you’d expect.) Again, this is on Legendary for the time being. We’ll see what happens in March when I have to downgrade to Revolutionary, if clicking Import prompts me to upgrade. I hope not.

If you read the Proton response to this article, it actually does seem like trying to figure out what’s going on with business process in a big picture way. Senior managers are interviewing, too. Not all staff are interviewing.

Personally, I think it’s just as much about seeing who can’t QC the slop out off their code as anything else. Maybe. Or maybe I’m wrong, I dunno.

Yeah, was that supposed to be profound or something?

As the 1% that actually pays, I’m invested in them succeeding and not enshittifying so I don’t have to take the time to move my email hosting. End of story. I have my own email domain, so I can kick them to the curb any day I like. And expect to have to one day.

Did you need to complain about it some more? Does baby need a Binky? Or did you only ever use the free thing and it didn’t meet your expectations of what free things should be? Sorry your free thing wasn’t spectacular enough :(

How about don’t use AI to begin with so you won’t have to weed anyone out due to “potential slop”.

If you haven’t used it professionally, LLMs can and do provide huge help. Making this a specially all or nothing argument only highlights a knowledge and experience gap on the part of someone making that argument.

Buuuuut, only an idiot asks for anything better than a starting point or a check of existing work. People relying on it to produce whole cloth work is for hobbyists and sloppers that don’t care or know any better.

You ask why they need to use LLMs at all, and they host their own, Lumo. What clear, financially solid argument can you make that LLMs are an objective net negative to every company? If they see benefits from a headstart on coding and ability to test their security, why demand they take that away when no human code is 100% perfect anyway?

I haven’t used it professionally, but I still know they provide huge help. It’s no secret. But my statement was simply following the logic of the previous commenter, who was saying that Proton are trying to weed out the people who aren’t able to QC out the slop. But if you are in need of QC to remove the slop, you are probably overdosing on agentic coding to begin with.

Anyway, “only an idiot asks for anything better than a starting point”, sure, definitely agree. But what percentage of being a professional developer at a company involves prototyping something new, and doing “starting points”? Most development is just tacking on new shit to old shit. Clamping shit together with other shit. I guess that’s the issue?, which causes people to still use AI because they are pretty much forced to, sometimes literally, and so actually do ask for more than just a starting point. And then here we are…

I fear you may misunderstand their goal here- direct quote:

“We need people who can translate AI’s capabilities into better products, stronger execution, and new ways of working — and who approach this change with curiosity, judgment, and urgency,” the email reads.

They specifically want to “weed out” the ones who ARE NOT using AI

No need to go search - Here is the CEO’s take on Trump, he tweeted support for Gail Slater for as Donald Trump’s Department of Justice Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust. In Dec 2024 He says

Andy Yen on X (formerly Twitter): “Great pick by @realDonaldTrump. 10 years ago, Republicans were the party of big business and Dems stood for the little guys, but today the tables have completely turned. People forget that the current antitrust actions against Big Tech were started under the first Trump admin. pic.twitter.com/0XVVO2ffcH / X”

Terrible take but also honestly not a super surprising one from a non-citizen foreign CEO who main competition is US companies that should be hit with antitrust suits and are supposed to be regulated by the US.

13 of them are visible on Lemvotes and they look naturally occurring to me. Granted I didn’t bother opening profiles to check their likelihood of being human though.

Figured it had to be a bot or something responding to an API request at that speed, or maybe someone just loaded the page up, scrolled down, read my comment, and downvoted inside of 8 seconds of my perfectly timed post.

The AI stuff is so frustrating. I’m terrified to really talk about how I feel about it, because my opinions are too nuanced to be shared in a bullet point in a performance review. Everywhere I’ve been lately, it’s been about how much you use something, not about your output.

So if I’m reading this right, Proton is re-interviewing their entire staff, focusing on how they’ve integrated AI into their workflow, and if they aren’t using AI as much as management wants they’re likely to lose their jobs?

Tuta cancelled my free account because their automated system detected fraud. This occurred after 24 hours of updating my contacts within Tuta and signing up for some services. I appealed and they only apologized for the inconvenience but kept the account closed.

Other people have posted similar stories but after a YEAR of use their email randomly because inaccessible. So Tuta isn’t a viable alternative for me as a Proton user.

Posteo seems like the only good option there… Sadly they don’t allow custom domains because of some hand-wavy “privacy” crap that boils down mostly to vendor lock-in like tuta.

There is a new belgian co-op company Nubo trying to break into the market, but they are tiny and running a nextcloud instance on-prem for storage. Performance is likely to not be great.

Any EU/Swiss-based provider that takes their job seriously, really. Here’s a starting point.

Proton’s encryption has always been more a publicity stunt than anything. A service that’s really committed to privacy shows it in their values and the way they act, not with technological gimmicks.

All that Proton’s encryption has really accomplished is that their services are one step away from complete customer lock-in: if they discontinue their “bridge” connectors tomorrow and force you to use their website and mobile app, and you haven’t backed up your email elsewhere, you’re fucked.

Migrating your email service to another provider should normally take one hour, provided you use your own domain(s) and back up your mailboxes regularly over IMAP to your own storage. Then it’s just a matter of changing some DNS records and waiting for them to propagate.

So call me paranoid but I’ll never use a provider that doesn’t offer standard IMAP and SMTP access to the mailbox.

Start with buying your own domain.

If you are interested, self hosting email has an outdated bad reputation, I have had much more problems with google blocking microsoft email from custom domains than from self hosted emails.

That said, it is still a lot of work. For a hands off system, find a national provider that can use your domain, so you can switch later while retaining your address.

Yeah, self-host … then you end up on a VPS with a bad spam/RBL reputation because they have other customers being spammy dickheads, and their entire IP allocation is listed. This covers far too many VPS providers. So, when you’re trying to simply get things done, you end up randomly having to troubleshoot your emails not going through or ending up in remote spam folders.

Its a mess. Email sucks. Wouldn’t suggest self-hosting if you have low patience or are busy.

I think the best option for self-hosters who don’t want too much headache from their email is to host the email yourself, but send your emails through a relay other providers actually trust. It sucks to get so close to full control and give it up, but if you’re like me, you send almost no email, so there’s almost nothing at all to see for the relay, and all your received mail still comes straight to your server.

Sure, if you don’t do your own research and legwork, first.

In fact, there are a shitton more bad corners you can paint yourself into if you are too fucking lazy to do some trivially basic research ahead of time, from hosts to software chosen to how you configure things.

Hell, a lot of these bad corners also involve turnkey solutions hosted by others. So simply having someone else do all the work can hose you just as badly. Sure, Azure/O365 or AWS Workmail or Google Workspace solutions are usually not that kind of corner, but unless you are willing to pay out the nose for minimal needs, you’re usually going to go for something a lot smaller and possibly more sketchy.

Good point. Though you are of course right, and it will cost money in perpetuity, I think it is important to distinguish between locations and which top level domain one buys under. At least where I live, I have government guaranteed rights regarding switching registrars and keeping my domain, and a court is needed (or lack of payment) to force me to abandon my domains. That way I avoid the problem of vendor lockinn.

The one thing that rubbed me the wrong way is that it treats the underlying host as “disposable”, in that it intentionally does not support in-place OS upgrades. As in, if you want to jump from an older LTS to the most recent, you need to explicitly spin up a blank, new LTS host, run the installation script from scratch, and then restore the data from an overnight backup.

I can understand an immutable container/binary with external data storage and config settings, but flipping the script and locking down the underlying OS? Yeah, that seems excessively unnecessary.

I’m sorry, WHAT??? I use Proton!!! YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DESTROY THEM, NOT JOIN THEM!

I truly hope we’re being overly dramatic here because Proton has been a good service for me. I do not feel like moving everything to another service. At least I have my own domains, though.

I’ve had my Proton for not even one year, & turns out they’re evil, same with Bluesky, I’ll move away, sometime, whenever I get the morale, it’s annoying, having to delete more old accounts, finding more even obscurer alternatives, the moving process as a whole is daunting, but I’ll keep going, because if I stop, how will I expect tomorrow to be different from today if I can’t bother to make change myself?

I didn’t use that feature mainly to avoid this problem.

I used an email for each service (xyz-amazon@mydomain, xyz-ebay@mydomain,… Etc) and set up catch-all email for them. I was using the xyz+Amazon trick before, but some services don’t allow it, so I switched do dashes.

To save people from diving into the Reddit swamp. Here is Proton’s response from a similar post over there:

Just to clarify, Proton is not doing layoffs and using AI as an excuse. We actually have a big shortage of talent and are actively hiring across the org: https://proton.me/careers#jobslist

AI is changing the tech industry and we, like everyone else, need to evolve our ways of working to remain effective in our industry, and to deliver features faster to users.

Proton exists to protect privacy and give people control over their digital lives. That commitment guides how we evaluate and use AI, including the tools we use internally. We see opportunities to build better products and work more effectively, but using AI requires judgment about privacy, security, accuracy, and where it adds actual value.

We are assessing how colleagues are adapting to these tools, what support they need, and who can help lead this work. We’re looking for concrete improvements in their work and thoughtful decisions about when to use AI - and when not to.

To do this, we’re in the process of figuring out who among our existing colleagues are the best future leaders, assessing whether everyone has the skills they need to take a step forward in a post-AI world, and making sure we are offering the support that is necessary, to those who need it, to succeed.

In the interest of transparency, the full email that was sent to some of our staff can be found below:

    Dear,

AI is fundamentally changing how we build products and how we work. The capabilities Proton needs are evolving, and we must accelerate our transformation to remain competitive and deliver on our mission.

Getting this right is critical to Proton’s future. We need people who can translate AI’s capabilities into better products, stronger execution, and new ways of working—and who approach this change with curiosity, judgment, and urgency.

Last week, Andy interviewed more than 40 senior leaders across Engineering and Product to begin this process. We are now extending re-interviews more broadly to assess how people are adapting to AI and whether they have the capabilities and approach needed for Proton’s next phase.

This is also an opportunity to identify people who can lead the transformation. Those who demonstrate the ability to rethink their work, put AI into practice, and help others adapt may have opportunities to take on greater responsibility, accelerate their development as leaders, and shape Proton’s future.

What does this mean for you?
    • Not everyone may be invited to a re-interview.
Given the scale and timeframe, interviews will be prioritized based on the organization’s assessment needs. Whether you receive an invitation should not, on its own, be interpreted as an individual outcome. Any decisions affecting your employment will be communicated separately.
    • For those that get invited, re-interviews will take place November 4–11.
Further details about scheduling, format, and preparation will be shared centrally.
    • Your interviewer will be outside your team and reporting line.
Interviewers will be selected from a pool of leaders who demonstrate strong AI capability and have aligned on the assessment criteria.
    • Expect a discussion about how you think and work.
We want to understand how you apply AI to real problems, how it has changed your approach, where you see opportunities to improve, and how you expect your role to evolve.
    • Come prepared with concrete examples.
Be ready to discuss what you have changed in your work, the results, what you have learned, what has not worked, and what you would do differently. A list of tools alone will not demonstrate this.
    • Your ability to adapt matters alongside your current capabilities.
We will explore how you learn, challenge established ways of working, exercise judgment, and act on the opportunities AI creates.

    What are the consequences?
These re-interviews are consequential. Interviewers will document their assessments, which will inform the broader review of our organization and talent. That review may lead to changes in roles, responsibilities, and continued employment. Individual outcomes will be communicated directly once decisions are finalized.
The process will also help us identify people ready to take on broader scope and leadership responsibilities as Proton evolves.

We recognize that this process creates uncertainty. We will be clear about what has been decided and what remains open, and communicate individual outcomes as soon as we can.
Please take the re-interview seriously and come prepared to discuss your actual work, your experience with AI, and how you can contribute to Proton’s next phase.

Today at 4pm CET, there will be a call for recipients of this email to answer a few more logistical questions.

The meeting will be taking place on this Proton Meet Link

    Best,

This definitely sounds better than the headline indicated:

However the actual letter to employees seems to undermine it (emphasis added):

That review may lead to changes in roles, responsibilities, and continued employment. Individual outcomes will be communicated directly once decisions are finalized.

Hey managers, don’t do this shit. If they had just stopped at “may lead to changes in roles and responsibilities” this would probably be fine, people understand that team structures sometimes need to change or modernize. But don’t lie to your employees and tell them it’s not about layoffs when that is in fact a possible outcome. If you need to do some layoffs, it should be entirely separate and part of the normal performance eval process, not done via some BS re-interview under a team who probably doesn’t even understand the work.

Yeah, it seems to obvious to me that you should never say something like “this could affect your continued employment,” even if it’s true! That means that all of the staff are worried about their jobs, even ones you have no plans to lay off at all. Such a shitty thing to say, causing unnecessary stress to everyone. It totally feels like a threat. I’ve been through a similar (but honestly worse) mismanagement scenario at work, and I still 100% trust the company less, even though I’m still here 2 years later.

That review may lead to changes in roles, responsibilities, and continued employment. Individual outcomes will be communicated directly once decisions are finalized.

Knowing how the hiring/onboarding process works in IT — i.e. how fucking hard it is to find, hire, onboard, train and build up a working relationship with an adequate employee — I strongly doubt they have a “shortage of talent” if they’re willing to fire (or even just threaten to fire) people over what amounts to tooling use.

Oh, also, if I got an email threatening my “continued employment” over shit like this I’d be looking for a new job ASAP. And I have been using LLMs for my work for a couple of years now.

AI policies are so dumb. You don’t evaluate people’s perfs on how much they use a tool. So what’s the damn end goal of such evaluation??

"Hey! I did nothing useful this year, but all with AI! -You’re promoted!!

The policy my company has implemented is the opposite. AI use is allowed, but no confidential client information is to be sent to any cloud AI service. Logic is that if we don’t have an actual NDA with OpenAI (or whoever), their privacy policy is not robust enough for us to take on that liability.

Interested in your thoughts on that!

Edit: we’re not a software company. We design medical devices, so nearly all data we have is confidential.

no confidential client information is to be sent to any cloud AI service

If the code has been crafted correctly, none should be.

Client info should be 100% data, and remain 100% in production. If you have any dev-side data to test and debug with, it should be 100% procedurally-generated pseudo-data that only imitates client data in terms of gross patterns, and not specific points of data.

Like customer names. Those names should be broadly representative of what is found in the regions the software operates in, in order to demonstrate acceptable data input validation and effective storage compatibility with those names. For example, you don’t want to be storing European names in a DB field that is not UTF-8 compliant, or validating those names by restricting characters to US-ASCII. But any one generated name that just so happens to match an IRL name should be a statistical occurance, and any extended data attached to that entry should (generally) not match any other IRL data for any IRL occurance of that name…

Absolutely, sorry for misleading - we’re not a software company. We do engineer for medical devices so confidential information in this case covers most everything we deal with. It might be actual IP, which is less of a concern, but it might also be trade secrets which as much more sensitive!

Multiple companies have that approach, I’m not denying there ARE companies doing things right (or at least better).

I work in a company using multiple agents. One of them is supposed to be off Internet, and even with that one we’re not to share sensitive IP.

But Proton is not an isolated case. I bet some execs have invested and promised so much they need to report some good numbers on usage, and you can’t make up productivity improvement if there are people left getting as much done without AI.

For the LLMs killer feature, software development, you don’t really need confidential information 99% of the time.

It continues to annoy me how both haters and glazers will over-simplify the topic by calling everything AI. There’s a giant difference in usefulness, ethics, and quality between LLMs that produce code guided by an experienced developer, and “art” slopped out for greed by some random schmo.
