Or you can just have a decent personality. I’ve never had a problem with both not believing in their astrology and getting laid. Just don’t be a dick about it and talk about something else.

      Its really not that easy.

Don’t be a dick and let others be their kind of weird is in general good advice but you can make fun of someone without being a dick and “their kind of weird” might turn into something harmful.

It might be okay, not okay or there might even be a need to ridicule certain ideas depending on the situation.

If don’t think it is reasonable to expect the public to entertain any ridiculous idea at all times, if you want to voice your believes/opinions you will have to let others do the same and they might not be nice about it. But lets be honest here a lot of “believes” aren’t that nice themselves so…

A harmful ideology is not the same, and nothing close of what we are talking about.

Everyone have stupid believes, but not everyone is mocked. You cannot expect others to change their mind if you do not try yourself to consider what need is fulfill by this believe. As pointed in another comment, astrology is a way to make emotional connection with others. But one may have other reason we could not discover if we do no take their need and point of view seriously.

This is a critical approach, and how we made science. Disdain produce ignorance and social domination.

And even if one refuse to get medical assistance because of this believe (which is not in the core believe of astrology), you have more chance to convince that person after that honest investigation.

What’s sadder is that yoga, chakras, and crystals are traditionally from religions within the Indian subcontinent. Westerners are simply taking aspects of South Asian cultures, indigenous cultures, African cultures, and then bastardising them into marketable “neo-pagan witchcraft.”

Not the people, industries do that.

People are very good at adopting whatever and thats mostly fine. Nobody is forced to partake in the corporate stuff. I also think its a bit unfair to westerners, we would like some culture too and we would not like to be restrained to christianity or the celtic stuff (that i personally like) but is very popular with nazis as well. In general living in the middle of europe everything native to my culture always feels a bit right wingey which many obviously dislike.

Being part of a foreign religion doesn’t make it non bullshitty though. I will not just shit on any religion that i didn’t grow up with but you can’t argue that there aren’t people everywhere commercializing and using religion in their own interest.

even if i were male and straight, I don’t think i could ever respect astrology…

but moreover, it’s creepy as fuck for someone to pretend a change in their beliefs just for sex. that’s kinda literally false pretense for sex. i know I’d never convince a jury of it, but as far as I’m concerned in my personal life, imagining doing such a thing fills me with revulsion and it crosses the line into sexual assault territory.

We have been married for 46 years now. Despite the fact she was into astrology and I listened intensely to her about it in the beginning. It is called learning everything about each other. And if anyone was “rapey”, it was her. These days she laughs and says it was the rebellious catholic upbringing in her, (I still call her a recovering Catholic). And that I was oblivious to all the hints she was dropping in front of me.

It all just one of the many shared memories we have together. I wouldn’t give any of them up for life itself.

personally, I’ve noticing people accusing me of lying when I’m telling the truth frequently. And when I lie, they think I’m telling the truth and never question it.

I used to be a bit of a dick about astrology. I still think it’s nonsense, but now I kinda view it as a structure for people to explore their own emotions and as a kind of authority struct to get people to treat those emotions as valid. Ultimately I feel like its no different than me sharing emo song lyrics with an “omg they understand me frfr” type message. Maybe the astrology believer isn’t upset because Venus is in retrograde or whatever, but they are upset their emotions are valid. I don’t gain anything from being a wet blanket about scientific accuracy in that situation, and they feel like I am invalidating their emotions if I choose to be that scientifically accurate wet blanket. Plus, retrograde is a dope word and I’m not sure if I’d know it if not for the crystal girls I’ve dated

yes. they want to feel their emotions are valid. even if they aren’t. Astrology and other theoretical systems also take the locus of control out of their own authority and place it in a higher authority to which they are subjected.

and therein lies the problem. not every emotion is valid. some emotions are invalid. but if you aren’t responsible for the causes of your emotions… you’re not responsible for figuring out which ones are valid or invalid. they are something that happens to you, not something you control.

and happy well-adjusted folks… learn to figure out which is which, and unhappy folks… can’t or won’t do this. and a huge part of therapeutic processes is … learning to identify and assess your own emotional states and whether or not to act on them.

Emotions can be based in reality. Or they can be based in false perceptions of reality.

That’s what makes them valid or invalid.

Your fear of the boogeyman in the closet is invalid. Your fear of the drunk driver weaving around you on the highway is valid.

Of course, if you don’t believe reality exists, or that reality is entirely derivation of your emotions, then yeah, you should be very very afraid and you should invest in anti-boogeyman man traps to put in your closet so he can’t get you at night.

But of course, most of us would consider people who believe in boogeymen to be delusional. Delusion is a symptom of psychological problems. And delusional folks think it’s everyone else who is insane for not seeing the Boogeyman.

people have lots and lots of emotions that are not based in external reality, many are based in fictions they make up in their heads. but of course, being able to recognize and admit that… is not a capability many folks develop. many folks never question their emotions at all.
