  • The metaphor of the open seminar is misleading. In an open seminar, the presenter stake a claim to the work, even if incomplete. In this case, the work was in private repositories. A more precise methodology would be the AI overhearing the authors discussing in their office and using that as base for a proof. This is even sneakier because there has been no public claim of the method or results by the authors.

  • I absolutely hate this system. I had a young kid starting kindergarten, I got infected with tree hundred variations of the common cold in the span of a year. I couldn’t take more than a single day off per month with self-reporting! The GP kept having to see me, verify I had the common cold, prescribe me with a couple of days of rest. If I wasn’t lucky and I wasn’t healed yet by then, I would also have to go back to see them. Dreadful. And they had to do it for most first time parents! Insanity. Perfect way to uselessly burn resources too… aaargh, still upset at it years later!

The root of why Europeans could claim the land in the Americas: it wasn’t developed, thus it wasn’t used, thus it wasn’t owned by anyone else. No matter all the hunter gatherers that were making a living out of the land. No matter even the earth works that could be found indicating use. There were no buildings, thus it was up for grabs.
