    I think BIOS has just morphed into meaning the firmware interface, nobody calls it UEFI. Everyone does indeed just say BIOS, which is okay. You can be more specific when it matters, which is basically never in the mass market.

    I like UEFI because of the way it sounds. I bet most non-native English speakers agree on it’s pronunciation.

    BIOS sounds good. It’s got that cold hard logic stamped steel ring to it.

    “We’ve got the update the BIOS”. Okay. Everyone understands that.

    The BIOS boots before the OS. Got it.

        I do say gooey though. Because it’s easy to pronounce and has an existing English equivalent homophone.

        UEFI does not.

        I also say Wizzy Wig.

        And usually I say sequel instead of SQL. Though I think I switch back and forth with that one, probably based on context, but I can’t explain when or why now that I’m trying to think about it.

          The prevent pronunciation of SQL as “sequel” is probably a result of it being frequently paired with an actual word, like MySQL or PostgreSQL. Or the fact that saying “M-S-S-Q-L” is a pronunciation obstacle course.

            It’s actually because that’s the original pronunciation. It was SEQUEL, the sort-of successor to the QUEL QUEry Language. The shortening to SQL came later.

            Ok thanks. MySQL, PostgreSQL and MSSQL are all cases when I actually say S - Q - L.

            I say sequel when I use sqlplus, sqldeveloper, SQLServer.

        What does lowercase have to do with anything?

        The only thing that differentiates an acronym from an initialism is if it’s easily pronounceable as a word.

        GUI is. GIF is. PDF is not. NASA is, NSA is not. SCUBA is. LASER is. FBI, ATM, URL, FYI are not.

        That’s really it. UEFI doesn’t have a real direct pronunciation to it. So it’s just U-E-F-I.

              Yeah, that’s madness. First of all it’s sequel.

              Second, fun fact, it’s a backronym! SQL came after a cease and desist for calling it SEQUEL, such that it could be pronounced the same.

              So yes, you can totally say Sequel instead of S-Q-L, it’s even historically accurate to do so!

      That’s what I’ve always done, though someone mentioned their native language being the conflict, so maybe in other languages the E sound is better marked with an i for some, no idea.

    systemctl reboot --firmware-setup

    This will cause a Linux machine to reboot directly into the UEFI. I know it’s not groundbreaking but it can be really handy if you use fast-boot. At least your days of pecking the Delete key during POST will be over.

    Windows does this too, though I’ve forgotten the method.

      That’s weird, on my machine it reboots me directly into the BIOS.

      Sidenote: if you dualboot, I can’t recommend enough setting up a desktop entry which runs this command:

      systemctl reboot --boot-loader-entry=auto-windows

      It’s basically a one-click Windows launcher.

          You are telling your computer you want to reboot your computer and then boot into Windows unattended (you can walk away and unless Windows crashes itself, it might be running).

          You have to interrupt the boot process to make a selection in grub, the one-liner above makes that one-time selection for you in advance. So you can walk away and get a coffee while your computer does the OS switch.

      I mean, unless you’re trying to access it at boot time. I just Ctrl+Alt+Del and hit an F button or look it up.

      Actually, your instruction complicates it. Just put it on the boot splash, ffs.

    I pronounce it the way I was taught when earning my A+ cert ten years ago, “you-fee”. This is how I’ve always heard it pronounced by other professionals. The only time I’ve heard it pronounced differently is by non-professionals.

    That being said, I still use the term “BIOS” when referring to “the firmware interface” for the simple fact that if you call it a UEFI and it’s a BIOS, someone will smugly correct you. Other way around, nobody bats an eye.

      This breaks down for professionals that are self taught though. For example, I still to this day, say in my head "F-Stab " for fstab, instead of “F-S-Tab”, and various other terms I learned when i was learning linux myself when I was 13. Didn’t understand at the time that it stood for filesystems table, so f-stab is how I pronounced the term in my head. In the UEFI case, I’ll just pronounce each letter at a time, U-E-F-I.

      If it helps, I worked at a BIOS company on one of the early UEFI firmwares (with Intel, who created the thing!) and we called it U-E-F-I, and same also at the major PC vendor I later worked for.

      Much later I really cringed the first time I heard someone from MS say yoo-fi, but I’ve had to come around 😅 So I personally blame M$!

      No worries that I’ll ever fuss at you over BIOS vs UEFI unless we’re dealing with a bootloader. Just make sure you have your boot order set right, and your secure boot settings the way you like (assuming UEFI), and the bootstrap fairy will bring your OS 🧡
