As of a few minutes ago old.reddit.com now seems to requre logging in to access it.
Shame as it was still the best place to browse for info about some niche interests.
Edit: Seems like they might be testing the change as it is hit or miss at the moment.
Edit: Adding this to My flilters in uBlock Origin seems to fix the issue for the time being:

I discovered Lemmy last week. Lurked for a while, then finally created an account. The experience is much better than Reddit so I say good riddance.
Welcome!
Yay! Welcome! I’m pretty new too and I find the quality of conversation much higher over here.
Same! I’m new here as well. I’ve had better interactions over two days on here than I’ve had on reddit over half a year.
Le narwhal eats bacon at midnight! An updoot for you, good sir! You are a gentleman and a scholar. That’s a heckin cute pupperino, too precious do not deserve!
EDIT: Thanks for the gold, kind stranger!
To make you feel as if you never left
You are missing the second edit saying that this is your top post
MAh iNbLocKs R bLoWin uP!
I guess we have to make that post their top post now

Tips fedora
Here’s the thing…
Some tips:
- We do have some trolls, we’re getting more popular. If you feel like someone is picking on you, those are them.
- Active is the default, but can seem less active because the active posts stay up longer. I made my default Hot, but then I check Active and Top 6 Hours.
- You’re probably going to go through a withdrawel. It varies by person, but mine took about a week or two.
Welcome.
Welcome to the place where real people actually say real shit!

We also have snarky dweebs apparently.

You suggest that there is only anime porn and Linux here, and yet, you are here. So either you loathe yourself, adore Linux and anime porn, or adore those things AND loathe yourself. I don’t think you’re in a position to be snarky, kiddo.

I see similar comments every now and then. What exactly is missing here for you? There’s a community for almost anything except some niche topics
Local communities are lacking. We don’t have the critical mass for that.
Niche topics was all I ever used Reddit for, so in my case, Lemmy just doesn’t replace Reddit at all. None of the subreddits I follow have an active equivalent Lemmy community. They go from a few posts a day and dozens of comments on Reddit to “last post: 3 years ago” on Lemmy.
More diversity, but since we’re commenting under a new user’s comment, that may be correcting itself.

Reddit being absolutely horrendous is what moved me to this site. I wish there was more people and more prominent communities though.

Gotta love how people continue to post this lol. Fuck spez.

I assume this is some reddit thing from after I left
Why tits Garfield…?
Here’s an earlier comic that will help explain and add more questions for you.

I’m not sure what this would’ve explained. But more questions, yup.
Wow, Garfield has some rockin’ knockers. No wonder Jon never married.
The real question: why not tits Garfield?
Not only fuck. I hope for the worse to him.
I have faith he flips his bicycle and knocks out his front teeth, which still won’t be enough.
Welcome to Lemmy for the last reddit users, that used old.reddit, looks like we are complete now. The rest of reddit are noobs and bots.
I came here three years ago when they killed the API and Reddit is Fun on mobile. I refuse to use their mobile site but still used their desktop. If they kill old.reddit I guess I’m done then.
You can do it. Just delete your account. I did it. I live without Reddit now, and I’m happy. After a while you won’t miss that cesspool
Same here.
BTW: technically they just killed it.
Same here but when they killed Joey App. But I haven’t gone back for anything and refuse to use it at all. It’s so bad every time my wife shows me shit on there.
Same as me, except I never went back. I don’t spend as much time here as I used to on reddit, but most of that was wasted time anyway.
i only use it on the browser. got banned last year during the purges. you can make another acc after a while(unknown), with a fork, that reddit is not used to. i just use the niche subs, no interest in the main subs(where most are happening)
Used Lemmy for a while but still browsed reddit logged out a bit. I noticd this recently so its only Lemmy now.
BTW: there is libredirect browser extension which redirects Reddit to libreddit instances.
I am saying this, so people use that instead of giving up and logging in.
Nope, not listening. I am using the increased friction as a reason for giving up and not using reddit at all.
Yeah that’s even better. I think the libreddit code could perhaps be used to also to help bootstrap some communities on Lemmy (by just posting the same links).
Or maybe that’s already happening?
Now that sort of thing could be more useful
I’m so happy they started doing this. They made me want to really start switching to Lemmy
Reddit is unusable without old reddit. Reddit.com is a horrible user experience.
Redlib still works, but it’s read-only (not a problem for me, I killed my Reddit account last year), and it’s probably a matter of time before that’s killed off too.
Was only a matter of time before they out-digg’d digg.
Fuck reddit.
If you need the old info download the archive. 99% of anything newer than 3 years is going to be bot slop. There’s zero reason to go to reddit intentionally.
Reddit archive? Whereabouts would I acquire that?
Steve is a jealous bitch and has made it harder to find archives of that content which he does not nor has ever owned. He’s like Smaug but with brain damage and an incredibly tiny penis.
Here’s one, you’ll have to hunt to find the big ones at this point.
https://academictorrents.com/details/85a5bd50e4c365f8df70240ffd4ecc7dec59912b
I’d wager that older dumps are higher quality, before the mass redactions and deletions of the various exoduses. If you’re looking for up to date information on current topics, it’s time to look for (or build) other places.
These are Pushshift torrents from 2005 to 2025: https://sciop.net/datasets/reddit. There are two data sets, one by month and the other by subreddit. Each is about 3.5 TB compressed and based on the compression ratio I’ve seen, about 30 TB uncompressed. This is without any sort of media, just text.
Reddit sent AcademicTorrents a request to take them down so AI models couldn’t use them as a way to avoid paying Reddit hundreds of millions of dollars for training data.
I too am interested. IA?
Agree.
Most of it sure, but there are still some active subreddits with human involvement I wish would switch to Lemmy.
Same. I have 1 or 2 subreddits I check for info/advice that I wish would just migrate over here. It just isn’t worth opening the reddit app and dealing with the worst of humanity being pushed on me anymore.
There’s zero reason to go to reddit intentionally
Know of a viable replacement for r/bapcsalescanada?
Run your own discussion board and literally tell people about it.
I don’t really have an interest in running a public board, and the reason I use(d) that subreddit was because I am also not interested in looking for the deals myself.
However, from another comment, redlib looks like a decent solution for the time being.
How feasible is it (legally, technically) to host a federated, read-only copy of Reddit data from before The Enshittening?
It depends how mad Temu Elon aka Steve Huffman gets about it. He incorrectly believes everything belongs to him.
Why bother?
Its all long since been injested by every gen AI model around, just ask one.
The problem with AI is that while 80% of the time it will provide correct information, but 20% of time it will generate very convincingly sounded bullshit.
This is the danger of it… You test it few times and then you start trusting it. Kind of like that farmer that destroyed his whole crop.
I agree. However I don’t think answers sourced from reddit are any more accurate.
Yeeeesss…, but typically it is easier to determine how reliable the person is from the test of the context.
Since Gemini is fed by the reason directly or might be fun exercise to ask it about yourself and while in some questions it will answer correctly or just loves to invent new things.
This works especially well if the person owning the account did not worry as much about privacy. So you hear many true things and also a lot of bullshit.
typically it is easier to determine how reliable the person is from the test of the context.
sure. that’s an advantage of reading off reddit.
an advantage of asking an LLM is that it can consider multiple reddit posts and stack overflow and whatever else.
you’re right that there’s an eternal problem of determining whether information is accurate or just confidently incorrect, but I don’t think that applies exclusively to chat bots.
You could make a zim file out of it and share the zim file. I imagine it would be quite large though.
Is there an easy way of doing that? As in is there an archive specifically for reddit or do you mean on one of the internet archive websites?
This news finally convinced me to make a Lemmy account so I can participate a little more instead of lurk. That, and generally how awful Reddit has been becoming for like, several years at this point, since the IPO.
I’ve swapped out RedReader on my phone’s home screen with Boost; though I think it’ll take some time to break the Reddit addiction.
I am looking forward to seeing Lemmy’s growth!
You’re actually joining at a good time. When i created my account it was one post every few hours haha
Yeah, it’s quite active now, how exciting! I started browsing it just like I did RedReader last night and it didn’t feel like I was missing out on news or conservations. Also I like the Boost UI in some ways more than RedReader’s, so I’m sure that’s helping make the transition easier lol. Reddit really shot itself in the foot destroying all the popular 3rd party apps, reddit is fun was my beloved. RedReader is nice to have still available, but it honestly doesn’t hold a candle to rif’s nice UI/UX. Boost being basically on par with rif for me is making letting go of reddit all the more easier.
Welcome to the last human holdout on the world wide web.
I believe Boost Has Ads right? Im using Summit by @idunnololz@lemmy.world and its phenomenal. It has no ads and is highly customisable or at least the parts you would want to customise are. Its UI is up to date and feels right at home with the rest of Android Apps. Maybe you can give it a try, or not if Boost works for you. :)
It do feel quite human in here, thank you thank you. :)
I think Boost does have ads, but it seems like I probably paid for premium at some point because I haven’t seen any. Way to go, past me. (I’ll be sure to check out Summit though, it looks quite nice too!)
I was addicted to reddit. They killed the Reddit is Fun app that I used every day for 10 years, so I had to switch to Lemmy. It was the best thing that happened to me. It took me a few days to stop missing reddit but I am so much happier with Lemmy and never want to go back there again.
Welcome! Lemmy lives on active participation, and you made the right call. Besides, the chatter here can get lively!
Not to mention we have some Lemmywide games and activities from time to time (the most recent being the Season 4 of !thebutton@lemmy.zip, the basic idea of which you may recognize from Reddit), and you’ll need an account to take part!
Yay, thank you for the welcome!
I created a new account a year ago to lurk instead of comment, but you’re right, participation = growth. I’ll be joining in again.
ENJOYING THIS REDDIT DOWNFALL? CONTINUE ON THE APP! Or else…

I’m sick of reddit. I’ve been banned three times for calling out Nazis. Nazis don’t get banned though
Same. I said “fuck republicans” and got ‘permanently suspended’… which is just the dumbest thing in itself
Meanwhile in r/hornymoderators:
"Fuck Republicans! Come enjoy of my disaster of a human body, conservative ladies! Runners up will be invited to my pool of hand stuff volunteering until my double carpal tunnel surgery someday.
That’s one ode the reasons why I switched to lemmy
I criticized ICE, and about 12 hours later I was met with a “Blocked by network security” page. The only option was to appeal to support, who wanted an explanation. I could still access my user settings so I went straight to the account deletion option.
I got banned for saying something about Musk during the height of the DOGE circus. I don’t know what I said exactly because they delete the comment and then ban you.
I think I said I’d like to see him test his rocket and go to Mars. Which, I guess implies,… something.
I got banned from r/SF for deleting all my comments besides the ones mentioning that I’m moving to Lemmy. The ban was over one year after my last time commenting on Reddit too.
It’s why I moved onto Lemmy. I can’t stand new Reddit.
For me it was the API changes that was the final straw. 3 years ago.
I don’t use Lemmy as much as I did Reddit. But I’ve also never missed Reddit.
God, was that really 3 years ago?
I know right
private_ryan.gif
It’s really bean a long time
Probably a good thing, honestly. We all need to be more offline anyways.
Welcome
Same. Just joined as old and new Reddit have login walls now
While I’ve been on Lemmy for a while, I haven’t really seen any hobby - centric or geek centric areas.
I’ll miss the movie threads in particular, but there were a ton of active crafts, art & ttrpg threads to get inspiration from. Any suggestions?
Some off the top of my head:
!Art_Alchemist_Guild@lemmy.today
There are certainly more! Tell me your particular interests, and it’s very likely they have communities too. Anything from anime to documentaries, from woodworking and knitting to cast iron, and from D&D to Pathfinder!
We can always create them here, no? But yeah, they were really good
I run a few small communities on the fediverse, and its tough trying to start one up. Granted I try to keep mine canadian focused, but its an uphill battle either way. I was never one to volunteer or be an admin of a community, but I wanted to get the ball rolling somehow. Very disheartening to realize I’m the only one posting in the community, esp because I’m just a lurker at heart.
While I’m nit a canook, I love learning and visiting your country, thank you!
You shouldn’t, you’re teaching them bad behaviors. If you go to Canada and you’re friendly to the Canadians they’ll expect the same from other visitors and will get upset when they’re mistreated and that will curdle their maple syrup and if that happens then they can’t feed their cubs. It’s better to just stay away from Canada.
But where else do cheese curds grow??
Idk about movies yet cause I’m new here as well but there’s quite a great community for books here. I’ve written two posts and one of them almost got 100 comments.
Reddit has some cool communities that don’t quite exist elsewhere, and even though I’ve found old-school forums for some of them, the vibe is different (usually older people who are often retired and can’t envision not having money or free time).
I used to pay a sub to Reddit but stopped back when they shafted Apollo. I wonder how things might have gone had Reddit focused on its community rather than the sad process of enshitificafion.
Fuck ‘em. We’re here anyway
I’m on both because the activity there is just unbeatable for niche topics, but I have been successful at bringing at least 1 or 2 other redditors over here and will continue to preach there!
Same, I still lurk in some subreddits because there isn’t a spot here for them yet. Niche hobby subreddits are Reddit’s strong spot.
It also has an insanely bustling NSFW sub-industry, the likes of which just cannot be rivaled anywhere else apart from dedicated sites…
Which ones? So I can avoid them…
https://redlib.catsarch.com/ <- this works for me but, like most comments are saying, reddit became a stinkhole of bots, agendas and stealth advertising. it kinda makes me sick to go there nowadays.
