Mhh, you are probably right. I’m really hesitant to invest more time into troubleshooting tailscale. My own tailscale connections at home are stable, and for troubleshooting at my family member I always have to drive and setup my notebook there.

Maybe I could try to setup wireguard directly in the fritzbox router at my family member. That might need less maintenance as running tailscale in a docker container, as it would remove the wireguard connection out of the NAS itself.

Opening a port directly gives me kind of an ick, because I don’t want to fiddle too much with the family members network. If something happens with it, I will be the one troubleshooting it, and I don’t need more work currently.

So Tailscale connection instability is not common? I don’t like debugging this, since the NAS is remote and I don’t have much time going to the family member again and again for this. It definitely is something on the remote site, since the tailscale connections at my home are stable.

I will definitely have a look at Kopia. I was in search of a good open source backup solution, since borg also has its flaws. I will check it out, when I setup the remote NAS again (as I also want to put bigger disks in it)

Am I too european to understand this? If they “get jobs elsewhere at the WMF” this is not a layoff, is it? I know the US has nearly no worker protections, so maybe that makes it a layoff. Do they need to interview for these positions again?

If this were something other than Community Tech, maybe I could convince myself it’s all just a coincidence. But the WMF has been on a generally upward trajectory at avoiding decisions that will piss off the entire community. “Don’t disband CommTech” might as well be the "don’t mess with the pancreas"of WMF governance. The only explanation for the WMF doing this—not just reörganizing but outright laying off the team—is that they are so determined to prevent the union from becoming official that they are willing to risk the massive community blowback (which, from a corporate-brain point of view, is a greater downside than the five people left jobless).

I think that is an interesting detail here, though I have not bothered to go through the sources for this.

Where they actually fired? From skimming your linked article it was more of a restructuring, moving them to different positions. The restructuring might be ill advised, though I could not find real information about any connection to the union topic, besides someone from the community claming that, without further information on that connection.

Do we have any direct signs of union busting? It seems these law firms do other things for WMF.

For proxmox on a VPS beware: Some hosters are using a kind of virtualization, that is more like a container instead of a VM. This means, that if you need kernel access (like changing active modules) you will fail. Proxmox probably won’t run on such a VPS.

Also: A VPS is already virtualized. Running nested VMs (some VMs on your Proxmos VM/VPS) will hurt the performance. Better stick to containers on a VPS.

Not federating at all would be a shame IMO. I’m really exited on this feature for git forges

Being able to self host a git forge was always possible, even before forgejo. Besides the gitea controversy I thought the federation to be the real killer feature.

OOTL Wasn’t there something about forgejos capabilities to federate? I had the impression, that it would go the fediverse route with many interacting instances. Then everyone can make their own rules. There are many reason to moderate repos. So why is this such a big thing (if forgejo federates as I remembered from the back of my head)?

While we are all making compromises and secure our systems to different degrees, saying that a compromised system is not a disaster is way out there.

Wdym wasting their time? They will search your home and confiscate all electronics, including the hardware running your TOR exit node and your phone, and your PC, and your notebook, and your gaming consoles, and of course any of such devices belonging to all other members of your household. And even if they cannot found anything that you have done wrong, you won’t get your stuff back for a long time (think half a year to multiple years).

I support this change. Hardware can also be relevant apart from thr typical servers/mini PCs. Recently I asked about possibilities for a self hosted video/audio doorbell and was met with really helpful answers. While this question could also have fitted into communities for smart homes, I still think it is a good fit here. Self hosting already is a rather broad term. We should not limit ourselves too much in its definition.

One problem can be, that the better fit community does not have enough active users, thus being unlikely to give a good answer. I think we should have a look at that before refering the user to that community.

It is already possible without a battery. The new door, that we are getting, can also be bought with an automatic lock, though its expensive. Probably because the eletrical lines are running cleverly through the hinges. Having the lock on the outer side, woukd probably make it cheaper
