PopOS today is a beta version. Apps sometimes crash. They just switched over to a brand new desktop environment and although it used to be a good recommendation for first time users that’s not the case at present. Once they polish the new cosmic DE fix all the bugs, it would be back to its former glory IMO.

The magic of Linux is Ubuntu is one of countless many distros. One can have great Linux experience and not be forced to use one particular version of it. Be it systemd, snap, flatpak.

WhatsApp does not need play services. It may be necessary for cloud backups and stuff…but you can do local backups instead… Play service is not a hard requirement.
Enable bbr in Linux kernal. You will be amused how big of a difference that creates. Since its a home ISP line… I suspect there may be tiny tiny packet loss that drags speeds down with traditional cubic TCP conjection algorithm.
