These organizations have been mining opensource for decades now; they know they can make money when people put their ideas into the wild. Unfortunately, it’s the price we pay for opensource. In the end though, opensource will win.

Google’s employees mostly use Linux desktops; also, Google’s Chromebooks run on Linux. If you have trouble believing that GSoC exists, you’ll really have trouble believing that Google’s got an internal Linux kernel team as well as a team for important userland components. It’s relatively cheap (for Google), buys them a lot of good will and gets people contributing to the stack most of Google depends on.

It’s a mistake to think they can’t do both good and bad. It’s okay to praise some things and criticize others. Many different people at corps make different decisions for various reasons. All or nothing thinking is what makes people radicalize
