Does anyone actually believe that?

Why does Google sponsor Gnome, KDE, GIMP, LibreOffice, Open Street Maps?

This is very suspicious

E.E.E. Embrace. Extend. Extinguish. When you’re the highest contributor, you get to exert certain control that would otherwise be impossible. They have a vested interest in this.

These organizations have been mining opensource for decades now; they know they can make money when people put their ideas into the wild. Unfortunately, it’s the price we pay for opensource. In the end though, opensource will win.

Google’s employees mostly use Linux desktops; also, Google’s Chromebooks run on Linux. If you have trouble believing that GSoC exists, you’ll really have trouble believing that Google’s got an internal Linux kernel team as well as a team for important userland components. There are so many problems with Google but this ain’t one of them. Yet another silly cm0002 nothing-post.

It’s a mistake to think they can’t do both good and bad. It’s okay to praise some things and criticize others. Many different people at corps make different decisions for various reasons. All or nothing thinking is what makes people radicalize

The business justification for this program is probably as a venue of recruitment of above-average quality talent
