    Move over stolen catalytic converters!

From William Gibson’s novel Neuromancer written in 1984 depicting a future where stealing RAM out of computer and selling it on the black market is a regular occurrence:

“Case took the pink handset from its cradle and punched a Hongkong number from memory. He let it ring five times, then hung up. His buyer for the three megabytes of hot RAM in the Hitachi wasn’t taking calls.”

At some point somebody should step in here. Computing has become so ubiquitous that it’s pretty much needed in a functional world. Why should AI centers get the supply while we suffer with higher prices/worse products?

Because that way they can rent computing back to us while controlling what information is fact and what is fiction.

This has been obvious for a little while now but it just doesn’t click for people or they simply do not care. It is precisely the idea behind a Chromebook. Everything in the cloud. By now, a couple of generations have grown up using them almost entirely and it has already been normalized for them.

That’s the funniest part here: those LLS are not very effective, but still “AI” companies have an enormous amount of money.

They get a lot of money because the company and investors that create genuine AI win capitalism. We’re in the endgame now. Or we will be when we are close to creating genuine AI rather than LLMs.

Hitmen on the dark web aren’t returning my calls after all I could give them is a „pretty please“. Inflation has even taken the cherry on top.

Like it or not, pricing is the most efficient way of distributing limited resources. Unless you want people in RAM lines

Its almost like governments can step in and limit the amount a single entity or company is allowed to buy, or make things cheaper/more expensive for certain customers via subsidy.

The US government has totally never done things like this to help turn a profit for oil execs.

They can, but they shouldn’t. The AI boom won’t last forever. The RAM, CPU, GPU manufacturers should get the maximum value now to increase manufacturing capacity. It will be needed later for other things.

For example, the crypto mining boom first caused shortages in the GPU market, but the following generation was a really good value. 3080s still sold out, but now it was to gamers. Without the crypto boom, the manufacturers wouldn’t have increased the capacity as much and fewer GPUs would been sold to gamers in the next generation

"What we’ll do is this, it’s like an iPad, but it folds. Just be careful folding it, or else the screen will break. Don’t worry, it is not an error it’s a feature. It’s there to warn the user they’re opening it wrong.

We also welded a speaker to an iPad. You know, the thing famous for being mobile. We don’t think it should be mobile anymore. You’ll like it…or else…"
