I mean, if we could stop being dicks to eachother for 5 minutes we could be on mars right now. We have the technology, it’s the political will that’s missing.

I love science, I love space, I think we should fund the shit out of NASA. But going to Mars shouldn’t be anywhere in the top 500 priorities of any policy maker right now. Let’s fix Earth first. (lol)

I disagree, you can’t make Mars an afterthought. It requires international cooperation to go there. And it’s not an either or type of deal anyway. NASA can focus in multiple things at once. Hell, we have an entire center at NASA dedicated to Earth observing satellites that monitor the health of the Earths ecosystems. I know bcz I work there. Trust me, we do care about the Earth, and we are trying to fix it. It ain’t the scientists and engineers at NASA that are trying to ignore the health of our planet.

Maybe if there was like any good reason to go to Mars, at all, we would make it a priority. But there isn’t

I mean, other than the fact that pur planet could be fucked, or intelectual curiosity, technological reasons, or just generally for science, except for all those reasons, yeah, and if you aren’t intellectually curious or want to go to space, then yeah, it makes sense that you don’t think there are any reasons to go to Mars.

I mean, for godsakes, it’d not like it’d hard or anything, and doing hard things for the sake of humanity is something to strive for as a species.

If our planet is fucked, Mars would be fucked as well. With only a handful of exceptions.

If we can terraform Mars, we would be able to re-terraform Earth much more easily.

“Just because we can” is the only real argument here.

Just bcz we can is a poor attitude to have about human endeavors. The best thing we do as a species is science. We spend all day long killing eachother in wars, and having lying ass politicians try to pull one over on their populations while telling then to get bent when they ask for support…

It is literally the one thing we do that is amazing, and awe inspiring, and reaches across political, socioeconomic, and social boundaries. If we as a species can’t even come together to agree that we should be pushing the boundaries of what it means to be human, I don’t know what to tell you. We are gonna be stuck on this rock until a cosmic event wipes us out. And that’s just sad for us.
